Porn Blocker Checker Invented
Okay we installed a porn blocker alright. Alright? But how do you test it? The standard way to test a porn blocker unfortunately is to try to visit a pornographic website on the Internet. Not a problem for those who don't need a blocker all the time. Like myself. I use Dansguardian to prevent the annoyances. If I had a study to perform on porn I could investigate. I am of course a male adult although I still don't visit porn to test Dansguardian. I'll come to that in a moment. What if I were a minor and a grown-up had to test the blocker in my presence? I also recall occasions when to test the porn blocker on a relation's PC I had to tell them to look away or kept my fingers hovering over Alt-F4 the key combination I use to close a window in a tenth of a second for using in an emergency like the failure of the porn blocker. Very embarrassing situations you will agree. However, now there is a prophylaxis at http://filter-test.echoz.com which will not display any kind of porn and will moreover tell you in plain English whether your web filter is working or sleeping on the job. It's my small-time invention and is restricted to word-content blockers. I don't give URL blockers a thing because they can't block unknown, new or miscategorized websites. I once had an extremely popular Windows porn blocker and I wanted to know the properties of potassium permanganate. What the browser spewed at me is often termed adult entertainment material. Note that the species of porn blocker I am betting on – the word blockers – will not be able to block image-only sites with benign-sounding URLs. However, that is a purely hypothetical situation since search engine optimization depends on words, not pictures. Moreover keyword filters also let you add any URL exception, e.g. good sites like those pertaining to medicine or criminology or education. There is one free keyword blocker called SafeSquid which works on Windows and Linux computers and lets you adjust a weighted keyword score value which means you can allow sites having less than a threshold quantity of banned words to show up, say news sites which will have words like sex and rape. And once you have configured SafeSquid hit http://filter-test.echoz.com and it will warn you indicatively if per chance the safesquid process didn't start or something else leaves you unprotected. It does take a little time to get accustomed to the functioning of a web filter you have not used before. When I used SafeSquid for the first time I couldn't find the configuration page which is by the way http://safesquid.cfg Nor could I set my proxy server correctly. Fortunately, their real time online chat support answered all my questions but not before I ran into porn. So I decided to create http://filter-test.echoz.com so that users of keyword filters would never again need to see pornography in attempting to avoid it! Nevertheless please pay heed to the detailed results. The interface will ask you to run the test twice the latter time after emptying your browser's cache and cookies. On Firefox click Tools followed by Clear Recent History to do this. With Opera click Tools followed by Delete Private Data. In fact I have not seen one occasion where the second test gave a misleading result but I won't warranty it most importantly because the blocker itself could function inconsistently. Then no test in the world can give a reliable result, even trying to visiting real hardcore porn. And please do not run the test in more than one browser tab or window. That's totally unnecessary and doesn't work.
If you would like to set your homepage to http://filter-test.echoz.com then every time you fire up your browser it will be easier to find out if you are protected. There is also a bonus. You will find a couple of striped squares straddling the heading on the test page which is also the homepage. Those are actually a pair of secret doors. If you click one of those, out pops a list of popular web shortcuts like Google, MSN, Yahoo, Orkut, OneLook and so on. Instead of memorizing or typing these URLs you can just type their serial number or you can enter absolutely any URL in this input box if you like with or without the protocol which is most often 'http'. You can also tell your kids about it. If for example Orkut is banned on your PC this secret door won't be able to open it up. It's just a shortcut, not a violator. You can also recommend items on this menu using the site's contact form and sometimes I won't be able to list an item yet assign a secret serial number for your almost exclusive use! There's also a list of blockers at http://filter-test.echoz.com/blockers.php If you like my site spread the URL but remember that is should not be whitelisted or blacklisted!
